Yucca Valley firefighters went above and beyond the call of duty to help a family whose recreational vehicle got wedged next to a Joshua Tree in Black Rock Canyon campground in Joshua Tree National Park Wednesday night. According to County Probationary Firefighter Justin Hashimoto, the family from Northern California had made a 3,000-mile road trip, with their next stop home. The driver was pulling out of a camping space at the campground and didn’t make a wide-enough turn and the RV got stuck up against a tree. A tree branch also broke one of the windows in the RV. Hashimoto said firefighters were called about 7 p.m. to help; they put several pieces of cribbing under the left rear axle, which gave the vehicle enough clearance to drive away, leaving the Joshua Tree unharmed. The family then drove to Fire Station 41 in Yucca Valley where firefighters helped cover the broken window with plastic sheeting for the final drive home.
