The Yucca Valley High School varsity boys’ soccer team put up a good fight against Cathedral City High School Friday at the Boys and Girls Club, losing 3-0. Junior varsity repeated a hard loss against the Cathedral City Lions, losing 7-0.
Varsity Coach Jorge Rordriguez named senior Captain Angel Ramirez player of the match for his leadership, effort and performance.
“The defense played well and is much improved,” said Rodriguez. “We had lots of chances to score, but we could not score tonight. Our team is improving every game and our future is bright. We thank all of our supporters tonight.”
Meanwhile, junior varsity repeated a hard loss against the Cathedral City Lions, losing 7-0.
“It’s hard in this Desert Valley League,” admitted coach Mendoza. “There is no time to breathe. Our guys were resilient, our guys dug deep. Cathedral City is a good team, they pushed us to our limit.”
Mendoza attributed the loss to Cathedral City’s ability to put pressure on the team.
“They forced us to play a lot of negative balls,” explained Mendoza. “Then we tried to play the next ball forward, and that’s where we were getting clobbered. We weren’t strong enough there.”
Players of the match were freshmen Donny Benstead, center defense, who played his best performance of the year, for demonstrating his development on the field as well as striker AJ Carlos for putting pressure on their opponent’s defense.
The Yucca Valley High School Trojans will be playing away against the Banning High School Broncos Wednesday, with JV starting at 3 p.m. and varsity at 5 p.m.
