The Yucca Valley High School Trojan boys’ soccer team honored its seniors Thursday night before playing the final game of the season against Indio High School at home. Varsity lost 2-0; junior varsity tied 2-2.
Seniors Alan Campos, Angel Ramirez, Seth Nazario, and Truman Powell were escorted onto the field by their parents, as Coach Mendoza announced their future goals after high school.
A close match against the Indio Rajahs followed immediately afterwards. Despite playing their hearts out, the Trojans lost 2-0, with the goals scored against them from a penalty kick and an own goal.
“Our team played the best game of the year,” said Varsity Coach Jorge Rodriguez. “I’m pleased with the progress our team has made from the beginning of our season to tonight’s end of the season.”
Seniors Angel Ramirez and Alan Campos were named players of the match.
Meanwhile, junior varsity tied against the Rajahs, 2-2.
“We were able to catch up with our opponents during the second half,” said Coach Adan Mendoza. “After having the Rajahs score on us in the first half, we were able to bounce back with momentum. I’m proud of the way the boys were able to recover.”
The first goal was scored by sophomore forward Sam Tate, with the second goal scored by junior midfielder Edwin Snead. Mendoza named sophomore defense Shaun Neville player of the match for his excellent display of leadership as team captain.
The coaching staff, along with parent volunteers, will be hosting the team’s banquet dinner Tuesday, February 18, at 5:30 in the Yucca Valley High School multi-purpose room. All families and players are welcome to attend.
