YUCCA MESA GIRL’S WISH COMES TRUE IN A SHERIFF’S HELICOPTER

Z107.7 has featured several stories about Abigail Snipes, the almost 13-year-old girl from Yucca Mesa who had a cancerous 15-pound tumor removed from her neck in January. In March, friends of the family sponsored Abigail’s Day, a fund-raising event so that her parents wouldn’t have to worry about paying rent as they tended to Abigail. Last Christmas, Abigail and her family had the best Christmas ever, thanks to the San Bernardino and Riverside County Sheriff’s Departments, the county Fire Department, California Highway Patrol, and the Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation, a law-enforcement charity based in Yucca Valley and founded by Corky Weaver in 1994. The Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation has granted wishes for 400 seriously ill children, including Abigail. Yesterday, Abigail had another wish fulfilled, when she discovered what it was like to fly. Managing editor Tami Roleff explains…

After a surgery in January in which doctors removed a 15-pound cancerous tumor from her neck, followed by chemo and radiation treatments that nearly killed her, doctors said there was nothing more they could do for 12-year-old Abigail Snipes, who was sent home in June, and she was placed on hospice care. Abigail and her family went to Disneyland, thanks to the Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation, a Yucca Valley-based charity that grants wishes to seriously ill children. Recently, 12-year-old Abigail Snipes asked her mother, Angela, what it was like to fly. Angela Snipes relayed her daughter’s question to the Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation, who found a way to answer Abigail’s question. Abigail and her mother were given a tour of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Aviation Division, and then they were taken up in the Sheriff’s helicopter, known as 40 King, for a flight around the Inland Empire. And Abigail’s family recently received some good news: MRI results last week showed no growth in the tumor on her neck.

Abigail will celebrate her 13th birthday November 6. The address to send a card to Abigail is:
