YOUNG TEEN KILLED ON THE HIGHWAY IN YUCCA VALLEY

A young teenager was struck and killed by a car that ran a red light on the highway in Yucca Valley last night. Early information from the Sheriff’s Department is that Owen McNichols, 13, of Morongo Valley, was crossing the highway southbound in a marked crosswalk on a Razor scooter on Inca Trail at about 6 p.m. last night, when Douglas Derby, 21, driving a 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse westbound on the highway, ran the light and struck the teen. Responding emergency medical personnel attempted CPR at the scene. McNichols was taken to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, then airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center where Owen McNichols was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m.
