WORKSHOP EXPLORES THE TRAJECTORY OF ARTISTS TO THE DESERT

The opening of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s brought a steady flow of artists from the East Coast who exchanged their art for the fare. The railroad used the paintings and drawings to entice travelers to explore beyond the Mississippi River. The instructor Steven Biller, editor-in-chief of Palm Springs Life, will detail this history leading up to the current contributions of commercial art galleries, fairs/festivals, studio/gallery districts, and public art and events such as Desert X and the Bombay Beach Biennale. Reporter Hilary Sloane will tell you more…

Biller’s workshop begins with the early California period, surveying the painters who came through the valley — and in some cases remained and became influential in the area. Next, Biller will explore modern art, artists, and events, including the Palm Springs Desert Museum opening. The contemporary art segment introduces internationally recognized artists inspired by the conditions and culture of the Coachella Valley.

The workshop is on Saturday, March 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. $120 for JTNPA members and $130 for non-members. To sign up, go to www.joshuatree.org or call 760-819-4714.
