The American Red Cross is facing a critical blood shortage and has issued an emergency call for blood and platelet donors of all types. During the last two months, about 61,000 fewer donations were given, causing a significant draw-down of the Red Cross blood supply, as blood donations are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. Donations are critically needed now so that patients can continue to receive life-saving treatments. Morongo Basin residents are urged to help and LifeStream will conduct a community blood drive tomorrow, Saturday, July 22, at Wal-Mart in Yucca Valley from 11 to 3. Due to the nationwide blood shortage, all blood types and all types of blood donations are needed. Donors will receive incentives. In addition, Desert Blood Services now offers donors free cholesterol screening with every blood donation. All prospective donors should be free of infections or illness, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not be at risk for AIDS or hepatitis. To make an appointment to donate blood, call 800-TRY-GIVING.
