The winter solstice will happen tonight while most people are sleeping. Ernest Figueroa has more information…
The winter’s solstice is the day when the northern hemisphere has its shortest day and longest night of the year. This year, the solstice happens at 2:02 a.m. December 21. The solstice marks the official start of winter.
Also happening on December 21 is a conjunction of two planets. Jupiter and Saturn—while in actuality are millions of miles apart—will appear to be so close to each other in the sky that from some perspectives, they may seem to overlap, and create a double planet affect. The two planets will be visible shortly after sunset, low in the southwestern sky.
