The Morongo Basin Historical Society’s Second Wednesday Lecture Series is scheduled for December 10, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum. The topic of this month’s lecture will be “Homesteading: The Free Land Idea” by Lorna Shuman, a 25-year veteran of the National Park Service, Education Specialist and former Park Ranger at Homestead National Monument. She will explore how the Homestead Act of 1862 developed in the U.S. from 1862 to 1936 and the effect it had on the land and the people of the U.S. She will touch on the expansion and economic development of the Western frontier and how homesteaders influenced our local history. Join the Morongo Basin Historical Society to learn something new. They are asking for a donation of $5. For more information call 760-364-2000.
