While this year’s wildflower bloom can’t be called the best ever, it is better than we’ve seen in a few years. ROP broadcasting student Jessica Harwood tells about what makes for a good bloom…
Here in our Morongo Basin in Twentynine Palms we can receive dazzling wildflower blooms throughout spring. If weather conditions permit, the wildflowers may bloom during spring and into early summer but the rain needed for their germination falls, on a good year, during the winter along with the occasional winter snow. According to the Joshua Tree National Park’s wildflower report, about an inch of rain with a half inch or so of snowfall is what produces an abundant bloom. Sadly the year of 2014 will probably not have a breathtaking bloom because we didn’t receive enough precipitation in winter. However certain areas in the park according to their website’s wildflower report will still have hike worthy sites of flowers scattered around Joshua tree national park.
