Our desert provides no shortage of wondrous treasures, such as a fused quartz phenomenon called “fulgurites.” To learn more, consider this Wonder Valley event. Reporter Heather Clisby has details…
Desert storms always put on a big show and occasionally, we get a unique gift. When lightning strikes wet sand with a 10,000-degree bolt, a fused quartz sculpture is created and a fulgurite is born.
Darlene Parris, co-author of the Wonder Valley column in the Desert Trail, will explain and locate this wondrous treasure on Wednesday, November 7.
The Finding Fulgurites group will meet at the gazebo in Wonder Valley Park at the corner of Amboy and Blower Roads, at 11 am. The group will explore behind the park and will not be walking further than 40 feet. All participants will go home with at least one fulgurite.
Bring a hat and water, a collection bag, a small digging implement (like a garden trowel), and anything else you need to be comfortable (folding chair, gloves, sunscreen, snack).
A $2 donation is requested. For more information, visit WonderValley.org.
