West Nile Virus is a potentially serious illness spread by mosquito bites who are infected when they feed on infected birds. West Nile virus usually causes mild disease characterized by flu-like symptoms in most people. More severe forms of the disease can develop, especially in the very young or old, or those with compromised immune systems. The easiest and best way to avoid West Nile Virus is to prevent mosquito bites. Outdoors, use insect repellents, make sure you have good screens on your windows and doors, and get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water. If you find a dead bird don’t handle the body with your bare hands.
