The drama “The Man From Earth” opened last weekend at Theatre 29. As a close-knit group of colleagues say goodbye to young Professor John Oldman, a farewell party becomes an interrogation as Oldman shares a secret he’s been keeping for ages. Reporter Rebecca Havely offers this review of the production…
“The Man From Earth” is a sci-fi drama, under the competent direction of Theatre veteran Eddie Tucker, who makes his Theatre 29 debut with this intriguing piece. Jared Phillips as professor John Oldman shines in the leading role. A relative new-comer to the theater scene, he truly rises to the occasion taking on the large, narrative role with great conviction. The interrogation is led by veteran actor Kurt Schauppner, who portrays Dan, an anthropology professor with southern charm who is fun to watch as he slowly drinks the lion’s share of the whiskey at the party. Easy goin’ Easy Boos offers some nice comic touches to his likable character Harry, a biology professor. Les Taylor takes on the meaty role of psychiatrist Will with fervor. He’s brought in to witness the incredible tale being told and to assess John’s mental health. Having just suffered the loss of his wife, the fragile man takes in an even bigger shock that leads to the strong climax of the drama. Newcomers Sylvia White, Robert Ames and Brittany Smith add to the ensemble with an especially sweet debut by Mariah Gouge as John’s love interest Sandy. Eddie Tucker’s well-chosen cast is a true ensemble team telling a thought-provoking tale.
