The Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy “Harvey” opened last weekend at Theatre 29. The play tells the tale of Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend—a 6-foot tall white rabbit—and his family who attempts to commit him to mental asylum and the staff at the hospital (all of whom may be considered the crazy ones in the end). Rebecca Havely attended and offers this review of the production…
Award-winning actor Kurt Schauppner is well cast as the perpetually friendly Elwood P. Dowd; a role he plays with charming ease. His sister Veta is well-played by newcomer Marissa Pennington. Theatre 29 veteran Dennis Boos is perfectly cast as Judge Gaffney. Abe Daniels is charming as Dr. Chumley, and newcomer David Whiting is impressive as Dr. Sanderson. Lisa Goldberg is endearing as nurse Kelly. Kylie Robinson has some sassy moments as Myrtle. Other cast members include newcomers Sean-Patrick Bresach and Carmen Robinson, with cameo roles by Janet Tucker and Robert Ames. This Pulitzer Prize-winning play is directed by Desert Theater League award-nominee director Eddie Tucker. The 1940’s era period piece is well styled with costumes by the cast; hair and makeup by Brandy Thiers and a lovely set designed by Tucker.
“Harvey” will continue its run Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 now through September 2. For tickets visit theatre29.org or call the Theatre 29 Box Office at 760-361-4151.
