The musical comedy “Once Upon a Mattress” opened last weekend at Theatre 29 to enthusiastic audiences. Reporter Rebecca Havely attended and offers this review of the production…
“Once Upon a Mattress” is a good old-fashioned family musical that’s based on the classic tale of the princess and the pea. Kylie Robinson plays Princess Winifred the woebegone with cute, quirky spunk. Her innocent Prince Dauntless is sweetly played Noah Wahlberg. Star-crossed lovers Sir Harry and Lady Larkin are played by new-comers John Pollnow and Natalie Stokes, both nice additions to the Theatres’ ranks. A trio of Theatre 29 veterans play servants to the throne: Robert Ames is a wizard with a warm heart, Kevin Myers a mischievous jester, and Charles Harvey a minstrel with silky smooth melodies. The parents to the Prince are King Sextimus the Silent, a mute played with charisma by Cruz Jimenez. The loud-talking, overbearing Queen Aggravaine is played with gusto and great command by Kelly Ebsary, an actress with impressive stage and screen credits, new to the high-desert theater scene.
