The sci-fi musical comedy “Little Shop of Horrors” opened last Friday night at Theatre 29 with a sold-out gala fundraiser. Rebecca Havely attended and offers a review of the production…

One of my all-time favorite musicals is Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s “Little Shop of Horrors” and its live on stage now at Theatre 29. The man-eating plant named, “Audrey Two” is a huge star in this production. Charles Harvey’s rich, soulful vocals give the puppet gritty character. Cody Joseph acts as puppeteer and is a masterful manipulator bringing every leaf to life.

Aidan Bosworth is ideally cast as shy Seymore Krelborn, and plays the undervalued shop clerk with a youthful, honest, wonder. Laura Berry, new to Theatre 29, delightfully portrays, Audry with a campy comedic style. Christopher Schoonover has nice stage presence and possesses a commanding voice in his many roles, most notably the sadistic dentist. Flower shop owner Mr. Mushnik is played by Theatre 29 veteran Dennis “Easy” Boos.

A trio of doo-wop singers played by Char Childs, Kegan Longuevan and Grace Rodriguez offer stylish backups throughout. The whole family will enjoy this Halloween themed musical comedy helmed by director Gary Daigneault. Musical direction is by Scott Clinkscales, choreography by Lisa Goldberg and costume design by Tera Bottorff.
“Little Shop of Horrors” runs Friday and Saturday nights at 7 and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 through October 27. The play is recommended for kids 10 and older. Tickets are $10 to $15 and are available at theatre29.org or by calling the Theatre 29 Box Office at 760-361-4151.
