The Groves Cabin Theatre opened its season last Friday night with the comedy “Educating Rita.” Reporter Rebecca Havely attended and offers this review of the production…
The Pygmalion-style comedy “Educating Rita” is a delightful romantic comedy running now at the Groves Cabin Theatre. Bianca Stoker is perfectly cast in a role that suits her very well. Rita is an uneducated hairdresser with a radiant personality who is determined to rise above her cultural limitations by becoming properly educated. Her college literature tutor Frank is a contemplative teacher who threw in the towel as a would-be poet and picked up the bottle instead. The witty professor is genuinely and honestly portrayed by actor Kevin Hayles. Abe Daniel’s thoughtful direction of the two-character comedy is apparent throughout as Rita’s character transforms; as her knowledge increases, the relationship between the two characters grows exponentially. Daniels also designed the show’s lovely set.
“Educating Rita” runs Saturday nights at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 through October 20. For reservations call Joy at 760-365-4523.
