The horror musical “Carrie” opened last weekend at Theater 29. This musical adaptation of the classic horror story tells the tragedy of Carrie White, a relentlessly bullied high school misfit with telekinetic powers. Reporter Andrew Dieleman attended, and offers this review of the production…
Newcomer McKenna Senshale is well cast as Carrie White, showing the vast range of Carrie’s emotions with ease. Her deeply dominating mother Margaret is well played by Janet Peercy. Newcomer Grace Rodriguez plays the revenge-driven bully Chris Hargensen with ease, as does Sean Sears, who plays her “bad boy” boyfriend. Kylie Robinson plays the character Sue Snell with great conviction, and Scott Clinkscales gives a heartwarming performance as her boyfriend Tommy. Ariel Montes, Anna Carnes, and Patricia Zuniga are well cast as Chris’s gal pals; as are Tommy’s “wing men” Malcolm Stanley-Wolfe, Andrew Henry, and Gabe Bateman. With Lisa Goldberg as the physical education teacher and Kevin Myers as the school guidance counselor, the cast worked together to produce a truly amazing performance under the direction of Charles Harvey. The performances were enhanced by an amazing set designed by Charles Harvey, and well-selected costumes and music by Kathryn Ferguson. With well-timed choreography, amazing singing, and moments of perfectly-timed terror, “Carrie” is a horror musical not to be missed.
This show is rated PG-13 and tickets are from $10 to $15. “Carrie: The Musical” will run Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons through October 28. For tickets, visit theatre29.org or call the Theatre 29 Box Office at 760-361-4151.
