Since the 1980s, the promise of potable water from the tap is an idea that many of the 120 service connections in Pioneertown had all but given up hope on. No longer a pipedream, clean water will flow from those taps in a matter of weeks. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has more…
With more than a mile behind them and less than three miles to go, workers from Sukut Construction are laying down section after section of water pipe along Pioneertown Road. Expectations are that the valves that will bring drinkable water to Pioneertown from a Hi-Desert Water District well in Yucca Valley will be cranked open by the end of June. The small, isolated community of Pioneertown has seen most of its wells taken out of service due to high levels of naturally occurring uranium and arsenic. The price tag for the project? A cool $5.6 million dollars, much of which is being covered by grant funds.
