VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR POINT-IN-TIME HOMELESS COUNT

Next month, the fifth annual census of local homeless people, known as the “Point-in-Time Count,” takes place. Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells us what it’s all about and how you can help…
This year’s Point-in-Time Count takes place from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 24. The results will be used in a variety of ways, including to help determine where county funds and other resources will be allocated. The count is conducted primarily by volunteers. The Twentynine Palms Rotary is organizing volunteers there, but volunteers are needed from every community and unincorporated area in Morongo Basin. Working in pairs or small groups, volunteers will visit locations where homeless people live and spend time in order to count individuals, conduct brief surveys and distribute convenience items and other essentials. The Point-in-Time count is organized locally by Morongo Basin Haven, an online resource for area homeless people. For more information or to volunteer, call 760-285-0715 or go to sbcounty.gov/sbchp.
