A Victorville man was killed Saturday in a freak accident. The California Highway Patrol said a 33-year-old man from Victorville had gotten his vehicle stuck in the sand on the right shoulder of Highway 62 near mile marker 63, which is about 30 miles east of Twentynine Palms. The man, who has not yet been identified, was standing in the westbound lanes of Highway 62 trying to flag down motorists to help him. The area was pitch black and in a curve in the highway. Jessy Krohn, 20, a former Yucca Valley High School student and current resident of Kingman, Arizona, was driving a Ford F150 westbound on Highway 62. As Krohn approached about 8:50 p.m., he didn’t see the victim until the last minute. Krohn was unable to avoid hitting the man, who was thrown in to the eastbound lanes. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics. The California Highway Patrol reminds residents not to stand or walk in roadways, especially when they are poorly lit or have blind hills and curves. If your vehicle becomes stuck or disabled on a road, try to pull it as far off the road as possible, while remaining on level ground. Switch on your emergency flashers. Carry flares or reflective triangles in your vehicle, and place them 10, 100, and 300 feet behind your car. Keep a reflective vest in your vehicle and wear it when needed. If you don’t have any flares, reflective triangles or vest, open up your passenger-side doors so that your interior lights are on.
