A Victorville man who was convicted of two counts of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence, following a six-day trial in May, was sentenced Friday to nearly two years in county jail. In the early morning hours of June 28, 2017, Douglas Barnes, 39, was driving a pick-up truck towing a trailer southbound on Old Woman Springs Road, just north of Alderman Road in Landers, when the pick-up truck crossed over the broken yellow lines and collided with a 2004 Jeep Liberty, driven by Joshua Robbins, 36, of Joshua Tree. The collision sent the Jeep out of control and it burst into flames. Robbins and his two passengers got out of the Jeep safely. Barnes’ truck continued southbound and hit a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer head-on. The two men inside the Lancer—driver Clifford Lopez, 21, of Yucca Valley, and passenger, Samuel Hernandez, 52, of Desert Hot Springs, were pronounced dead at the scene. Barnes was sentenced Friday by Judge Rodney Cortez to 364 days in county jail for each count, for a total of 728 days, with credit for 19 days served. In lieu of a $2,298 fine, Cortez added an additional 10 days to Douglas Barnes’ sentence.
