Valentine’s Day is here and a local animal rescue has an idea about a unique way to celebrate this day of love, by giving it back. Reporter and animal lover Heather Clisby has the fuzzy details …
Based in Morongo Valley, Refuge Ranch is hosting a Valentine’s Day event to encourage sponsorship for their more than 40 rescued horses, donkeys, pigs, goats, and llamas. Founded by Susan and Russ Miller, the non-profit large-animal rescue organization is highlighting February 14 in honor of Valentine, the matriarchal goat of the ranch.
The Millers also utilize the ranch as a place where at-risk kids can visit and learn about the animals while developing empathy and compassion. Each animal has a name and backstory listed on the ranch’s site, www.refugeranchca.com.
Monthly cost of care for each animal ranges from $100-450 for food, shelter, grooming and medical care, depending on the size of the animal and existing medical conditions. The Sponsor-an-Animal Program is a monthly or annual donation of any size in honor of a specific animal.
Refuge Ranch is located at 50148 29 Palms Highway in Morongo Valley. For more info, call 760-578-1187 or visit www.refugeranchca.com.
