Local volunteers are being sought to help drive Morongo Basin Veterans to the VA Hospital in Loma Linda. Reporter Mike Lipsitz tells you what the job is and how to sign up…
The VA Hospital in Loma Linda urgently needs volunteer drivers to transport veterans from the Morongo Basin to appointments in Loma Linda. Many veterans have limited resources, are unable to drive, or lack access to public transportation. Volunteers will use passenger vans donated by the Disabled American Veterans organization. A regular, valid driver’s license is required as is auto insurance; however, the VA covers any accidents that may occur during assignment. Drivers must also pass a physical exam provided free by the VA. Drivers do not physically lift riders, but may be asked to provide assistance such as adjusting seat belts, holding the door, placing a step stool for the riders to board or disembark from the van. Drivers receive a free lunch on days they volunteer as well as regular recognition in the form of service awards. For more information or to volunteer, call 909-825-7084, extension 6011 or email [email protected]. A volunteer packet will be emailed to you.
