The first major Broadway musical production of the Theater 29 2015 season opens tonight. “Urinetown the Musical” is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. Mirroring the headlines of today, a terrible water shortage—caused by a 20-year drought—has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom. “Urinetown the Musical” is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. On Broadway, the show was nominated for an impressive 10 Tony Awards, winning best book, score, and direction. It also won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical. Audiences should not let the title fool them. The show is not an indulgence in toilet humor. Rather, it is a light and cerebral look at how greed and corruption on the highest levels impacts us all. “Urinetown the Musical” runs at Theatre 29 through March 28, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m., with 2:30 p.m. Sunday Matinees March 8 and 22. Tickets are $12 for regular admission, $10 for seniors and military, and $8 for children under 12 and students with ID. With some mild “potty humor” it is suitable for children. Tickets may be ordered online at www.theatre29.org, or by calling the Theatre 29 box office at 760-361-4151.
