Two Morongo Basin men were arrested Thursday, accused of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. About 6 p.m. Thursday, deputies were called to the Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree for a woman who had been badly beaten. The victim told deputies that Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, her boyfriend, Ronald Sartain, 32, of Yucca Valley, hit her over the head with a broken ax handle, pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the ribs with steel-toed shoes. When Sartain left the home, the woman ran for help and was taken to the hospital. Deputies saw that the victim had two black eyes, a split lip, and possible broken ribs. Deputies searched for Sartain in the 55800 block of Santa Fe Trail in Yucca Valley, but could not locate him.
On Friday, deputies were performing surveillance on Sartain’s home on Santa Fe Trail when they saw him leave his home in a vehicle being driven by Daniel Correll, 41, of Joshua Tree. Deputies stopped the vehicle about 1:30 p.m. near Cherokee Trail and Highway 62 in Yucca Valley. Correll put his vehicle in reverse and rammed the Sheriff’s patrol car. Sartain allegedly resisted arrest and was taken into custody after a short struggle with detectives. Detectives served a search warrant on Sartain’s home and located the axe, vase, and steel-toed boots. Ronald Sartain was arrested for investigation of attempted murder and resisting arrest, booked into the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $1 million. Daniel Correll was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, and for violating the terms of his probation, and booked into the Morongo Basin Jail .
