Looks like our well-worn path of Highway 62 may be getting an upgrade in the not-to-distant future. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…
State Route 62, also known as Twentynine Palms Highway, stretches 151.4 miles through San Bernardino County. The busy highway hosts relentless traffic and it shows, but come September, CalTrans will put out a bid for a $50 million pavement rehabilitation project on two sections of Highway 62.
Similar to the recent upgrade on I-10, the repaving would be done in both directions and will include shoulder upgrades and the installation of pedestrian beacons and crosswalks in certain designated areas.
The first section will cover a five-mile stretch in Twentynine Palms from Canyon Road to Utah Trail. Tentatively scheduled for December, the roadwork would need to be aligned with the upgrade work for Project Phoenix.
The second section, likely to begin in early 2021, will repave the 17.5 miles from Indian Canyon Drive to Yucca Mesa Road.
