TWO PART STORY ON YUCCA VALLEY’S MEASURE L; TODAY, IN FAVOR, TOMORROW, AGAINST

On June 5, Yucca Valley residents will be asked to vote on Measure L, a citizens’ initiative that would allow commercial indoor cultivation and manufacturing of cannabis in industrial zones of Yucca Valley and in the Old Town commercial zone. In part 1 of a two-part series, Managing editor Tami Roleff explores the arguments in favor of the measure. Part 2 will discuss the issues against Measure L…
Supporters of Measure L, which Yucca Valley residents will vote on June 5, say the measure would allow the town to regulate nearly all forms of state-licensed commercial cannabis activity, such as cultivation, manufacturing, laboratory testing, quality control, research and development, and wholesale distribution. Measure L would NOT permit retail sales or dispensaries in town limits. Marijuana may not be advertised to children, or near schools, and anyone under 21 is not allowed in any marijuana facility. Signs may not depict or refer to marijuana. All cannabis businesses must obtain state and town permits, which include criminal background checks, and volatile extraction labs may not be located within 250 feet of residential areas. The town may shut down any business that does not comply with state and local regulations. If Measure L is passed, the town council may make any changes it wants to the ordinance after two years, including banning it.
