Two injured in head-on collision in Johnson Valley

A two-vehicle crash on Old Woman Springs Road in Johnson Valley seriously injured two men Thursday afternoon.

UPDATED 11 a.m.

Two men were seriously injured following a head on crash in Johnson Valley Thursday afternoon. The California Highway Patrol says about 4:40 p.m. that Anthony Wilson, 27, of Twentynine Palms, was driving southbound on Old Woman Springs Road when he pulled his 2019 Ford F-150 pick-up truck into the northbound lane to pass traffic. Traveling northbound on Old Woman Springs Road was Alexander Merz, 50, of Texas, who was driving his 2018 Nissan Versa. The two vehicles collided head on near Olivine Road.

The male driver–and sole occupant of the car had to be extricated by firefighters who used the Jaws of Life.

Wilson was able to get out of his truck on his own, but firefighters from Yucca Valley and Yucca Mesa needed to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Merz from his car. Alexander Merz was flown by Mercy Air to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs; Anthony Wilson was taken by Morongo Basin Ambulance to Desert Regional.
