TWO HIKER RESCUES IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

Two hikers were rescued in Joshua Tree National Park Sunday in separate incidents. On Saturday, a 21-year-old man from Great Britain was hiking in the Rattlesnake Canyon area when he became separated from the others in his party. Search and rescue teams from Joshua Tree National Park, Desert Search and Rescue, and the county were notified by a 911 call at 6:50 p.m. Saturday that the man was missing. Searchers found him about 8:30 Sunday morning and he was airlifted out by a Sheriff’s helicopter. The unidentified man was taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center for minor injuries and observation.

Sunday morning about 10:30 or 11 a.m., a woman hiking 49 Palms Canyon became dehydrated and needed help hiking out of the canyon. Firefighters from Twentynine Palms hiked about 20 minutes up the trail to the woman, described only as being in her 50s or 60s, and assisted her down the trail to the parking lot. Rescue personnel remind residents and hikers to stay with your group, always carry more water than you think you’ll need, and dress for unpredictable weather.
