Two former Yucca Valley residents were killed early New Year’s morning when a drunk and high teenage driver hit their van as it was pulling out of their driveway in Texas. About 12:30 a.m. January 1, Jesus Aguilar Jr., also known as Jesse, was pulling out of his driveway in San Antonio with his 14-year-old stepdaughter, Kristina Spohn, 5-year-old son Jesus III, and 1-year-old daughter Ariel.
A Chevy Silverado, driven by 18-year-old Cesar Gonzalez, was racing down the street at speeds estimated to be 80 to 100 miles per hour, when the truck crashed into the van. Aguilar was killed on impact; Kristina was ejected from the van and did not survive. After spinning around from the impact, the van burst into flames. Neighbors ran to help and were able to get Jesus III and Ariel out of the van, but the children received second degree burns over 80 percent of their bodies.
After hitting the minivan, Gonzalez’s truck continued down the street until it hit a fence and utility poles. Gonzalez and the other boys in the truck fled on foot and San Antonio police were unable to locate them until Gonzalez’s mother turned him in.
Aguilar is a former Marine who used to work in the tire department at the Yucca Valley Walmart. His stepdaughter, Kristina Spohn is a former student of Onaga Elementary School in Yucca Valley. Aguilar’s fiancée, Lucia Ambriz, is also a former resident of Yucca Valley.
