The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department states that it has received reports of clowns in the county. “Clowning” is when someone dresses up as a frightening clown and walks around schools and other areas trying to scare members of the public. Clowning reports are often spread by social media, many of which are hoaxes or pranks. However, Sheriff’s deputies will investigate each case of clowning as appropriate, and the incidents will be treated as a criminal act if they meet the elements of crime such as criminal threats, disturbing the peace, or inciting a riot. Deputies have made two arrests for clowning last week. Investigators note that reports of clowning slow down other calls for service. Parents are urged to question their children about activities that may indicate participation in clowning. For more information, call the Sheriff’s Department at 760-366-4175.
