The Twentynine Palms Historical Society’s weed show may still be months away, but it’s not too early to start thinking of ideas. This year’s theme for the weed show, held the first weekend in November, is “Colorful Characters.” Managing editor Tami Roleff has all the categories for entering your composition in the show…
The 2018 Weed Show categories honor the colorful characters of Twentynine Palms. Two categories involve purple glass: purple glass entrepreneur Nelle Godwin for flawless glass, and lovable curmudgeon Doreen Chamberlin for broken glass. Miniature compositions, three square inches and six square inches, are newshound Prudie Underhill and desert artist Alice Moses. Other categories include transportation engineer Johnnie Hastie; miner Bill McHaney; early desert tweeter Blanche Ellis; photographer Ted Richardson; athlete Barbara Grether; and homesteader Bill Keys. Philosopher John Samuelson is for oversized compositions; and the category for kids 12 and under is recreation director Bill Proctor. This year’s weed show is scheduled for November 3 and 4.
