TWENTYNINE PALMS WATER CONSIDERS MAJOR RATE INCREASES

The Twentynine Palms Water District is considering a rise in customer rates over the next five years, and residents are concerned. Reporter Heather Clisby has details…

In a public meeting held October 14, the Twentynine Palms Water District heard some unwelcome news. Kim Boehler of the consulting firm NBS stated that cost projections could see water rates rise up to 8 to 10 percent annually over the next five years, beginning in January 2021. The rate increases, if imposed, would be due to a rise in costs of operations, maintenance, capital improvement projects, debt service, unfunded regulations and keeping healthy reserves.

In response, several members of the public vocally objected to the possibility of a rate increase, citing financial strain. To address the matter, the Twentynine Palms Water District is holding another public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, at its office, 72401 Hatch Road.

General Manager Ray Kolisz stated the meeting will be followed by notifications to rate payers about protest procedures and public hearings related to the possible rate hikes.
