TWENTYNINE PALMS WATER ADOPTS GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT PLAN, DISCUSSES FEES

The topics at Wednesday’s meeting of the Twentynine Palms Water District included groundwater management, capital projects, and revised fees.  Managing Editor Tami Roleff summarizes the discussions…

At the Twentynine Palms Water District Board of Director’s regular meeting on Wednesday, the directors adopted a new groundwater management plan. General Manager Tamara Alaniz (TAM ah ruh AL a knees) said that in the budget workshop, the directors voted to defer some capital maintenance projects—such as purchasing an updated geographic information system—to later years, so the District wouldn’t have to go into debt to pay for the projects. Fire Chief Jim Thompson had brought forward for discussion and possible action the feasibility of implementing fire protection fees and charges. The directors discussed imposing higher fees for emergency services on non-residents, but questioned how to determine if someone—such as a part-time or seasonal resident—was a resident of Twentynine Palms. The Directors asked that the issue come back at a later meeting, after staff researched the issues with legal counsel.

In a followup conversation, General Manager Alaniz told z107.7 that the Water District board will work with staff to come up with a plan for a requested joint meeting with the City Council.
