There was a steady and enthusiastic crowd Twentynine Palms residents Saturday morning at the location for a new park at Sullivan and Adobe Roads. A beautiful desert morning showcased the unveiling of concept plans for the park the result of a series of public meetings held to gather information on what residents wanted in a new park.
Darin Viera of architects Mithun, Hodgetts, Fung, was on hand to show visitors the giant park plan drawn with color codes on the sand in a large area off the parking lot. Large, posted displays gave even more detail. The city is applying for Prop 68 funding for the park, estimated to cost some $8 million. Park and Recreation staff handed out materials, Pioneer Days buttons and serve free tacos.
Anchored by an expanded Theatre 29—with expanded seating from 95 to 165—the park plan calls for an outdoor concert and festival area with a covered stage pavilion and adjoining picnic area under shade. A series of walking paths and natural and finished running trails wind among a sculpture area, nature trail, and demonstration gardens. The park would also feature tennis and basketball courts, soccer, sand volleyball, a multi-generational playground, children’s play area, and even a kite flying hill. Another highlight is a proposal for a bicycle flow course and riding trail.
The plan now goes to the state; the city hopes to hear whether the grant is approved in early 2021.
