The Twentynine Palms Planning Commission had a hopeful announcement in its regular meeting last night. Reporter Cassidy Zimarik has the story…

In its regular meeting Tuesday, the Twentynine Palms Planning Commission heard from Community Devolvement Director Travis Clark, who announced the intent to apply for the fourth and final round of funds from California’s Proposition 68 Bond Act. The funds—if granted—would pay for most of the construction costs to build Pioneer Park, the third major park in the city at Adobe Road and Sullivan Road. The centerpiece of the park would be a renovation and expansion of Theatre 29.

He also noted there is no progress on Project Phoenix because the city is waiting for Frontier to submit a purchase order to Southern California Edison. The utilities—electric and telecom—are going into a combined trench. In order for Edison to proceed, he said Edison needs to receive a purchase order from Frontier, but he hopes construction will begin in August.

The city is discussing the final conditions of approval for a new O’Reilly Auto Parts store, which will be presented to the commission for approval in August.

The sole action item concerned the adoption of an updated vehicle miles traveled policy, which is mandated by the county and the state. The new policy would update the way the city measures transportation impacts.
