TWENTYNINE PALMS RELEASES MAPPING TOOLS FOR PUBLIC INPUT ON REDISTRICTING

In late September, California released updated demographic and population data resulting from the 2020 census, and the city of Twentynine Palms has released mapping tools to help their residents engage in the redistricting process. Reporter Heather Clisby has details …

With the U.S. Census complete, states must now begin the process of redistricting to reflect the changes in population and demographics in each city. In the spirit of transparency, Twentynine Palms has released mapping tools to help its’ citizens have a say in how their voting districts will be re-drawn. All residents of the city’s five districts are invited to utilize any one of the tools offered, such as:

• Paper maps with population counts can be printed from the website, drawn on and submitted via email: [email protected]. Maps can also be picked up and dropped off, or mailed to City Hall, 6136 Adobe Road, Twentynine Palms, CA, 92277.

• Residents can download Dave’s Redistricting App (DRA), which enables residents to create, view, analyze and share redistricting maps with others.

• Access the interactive map where residents can review population numbers and other statistics, as well as analyze draft maps once they are shared.

All mapping tools are available at the city’s redistricting website, draw29palms.org. Residents may submit more than one map throughout the process. Once the resident submissions have been collected, draft maps will be reviewed by the city’s demographer and posted on the redistricting website. Both the submitted maps and those that meet legal requirements will be considered by the city council for final adoption.

The first round of maps will be presented to the council during a public hearing on February 8, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. The deadline to submit maps for this hearing is January 25. For a complete schedule of the remaining public meetings, visit draw29palms.org/schedule.
