The city of Twentynine Palms got a green light from the courts earlier this year to use bond proceeds to implement Project Phoenix, the city’s downtown redevelopment effort. Z107.7 News inquired about the status of the effort. Reporter Dan Stork asked Twentynine Palms City Manager Frank Luckino whether he would be giving an update on Project Phoenix at the next city council meeting. He said that it will not be on the agenda. However, he told us that city officials would be getting together with the city attorney and the consulting firm that has been engaged to help with project implementation next Thursday, July 30, to have a kickoff meeting for the process. With regard to the property on the corner of Yucca Avenue and Twentynine Palms Highway that the City wants to purchase as part of the redevelopment effort, Luckino said that it is still “in environmental review.” Since that location once held a gas station, the environmental rules are stringent, with regard to its reuse.
