TWENTYNINE PALMS PLANNING COMMISSION TAKES UP MOBILE HOME PARKS, ROAD TREATMENT

The Twentynine Palms Planning Commission gathered this week to check a few items off their list. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…

This week’s Twentynine Palms Planning Commission meeting was brief and efficient. The first agenda item was a proposed re-phrasing of the development code for Mobile Home and Special Occupancy Parks—the latter pertaining to approved areas for recreational vehicles. Community Director Travis Clark explained the revision was initiated by the city, driven by a backlog of what he termed “code clean-up.”

The current code allows for a “six-foot-high block wall” around sites, which is limiting and expensive. The new code language would open up potential for a broader range of material options as well as alternative landscape solutions.

Next up was the consideration of an alternative road base for the Southern California Vipassana Center off Highway 62. The 152-acre meditation center has taken steps to address erosion issues in and around the property but sought approval for using a crushed miscellaneous stone base for its roadways. The Commission approved the request on the condition of periodic evaluations. If erosion continues, the center’s roads would be re-paved to meet city standards.

Travis Clark also offered a few updates on Project Phoenix, namely the hiring of Holt Architecture out of Rancho Mirage for the project.
