TWENTYNINE PALMS PLANNING COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING ON DOWNTOWN PLAN REDO TONIGHT

The Twentynine Palms Planning Commission tonight continues its ongoing discussion on rescinding and replacing the city’s Downtown Economic Revitalization Specific Plan. This time the public gets to participate. Reporter David Haldane explains…

And the beat goes on. In yet another of what seems like an endless number of steps, the Twentynine Palms Planning Commission will hold a public hearing tonight on the likely rescission of a downtown revitalization plan in effect for the last five years.

Two months ago, the City Council and Planning Commission reached consensus on doing away with the Downtown Economic Revitalization Specific Plan adopted in 2012. The problem, they said, was that many of its provisions contradict the city’s goal of creating a “walkable, pedestrian friendly” downtown. More specifically, the plan doesn’t conform to the boundaries of Project Phoenix, includes design standards inimical to economic development, imposes overly restrictive allowable land uses and is generally out of date.

Tonight, the public gets to weigh in. The meeting gets underway 5 p.m. at City Hall on Adobe Road.
