A 19-year-old Marine stationed at the Marine Base in Twentynine Palms was killed early Wednesday morning in a car crash in Tulare County. According to the California Highway Patrol, Layne Johnson, a private first class armorer with VMU-1, was driving northbound on Highway 99 near Traver when he apparently fell asleep about 6 a.m. The CHP said Johnson’s car drifted onto the shoulder where it hit a guardrail. The force of the impact launched the car into the air, where it hit a sign about 4 feet off the ground with the roof of the car. Layne Johnson was killed on impact.
