The military and civilian communities of the Morongo Basin mourn the death of a Twentynine Palms Marine. The Department of Defense announced the death Corporal Christopher G. Singer, 23, of Temecula, who died Saturday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to the North County Times, Singer died when he was shot on patrol. He was assigned to 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms. As a combat engineer, Singer swept for mines, performed demolition, construction and a host of other jobs. Singer’s personal service awards include the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal, Afghanistan Campaign medal, Global War on Terrorism Service medal and the National Defense Service medal.
