A man was critically injured Wednesday afternoon following a roll-over crash in Joshua Tree. According to CHP officer Simon Miller, at about 1:50 p.m., William Gamble, 22, of Twentynine Palms, was driving his 2011 Dodge westbound on the highway at what witnesses said was a very high rate of speed. For unknown reasons, Gamble lost control of his car just west of Olympic Road, left the roadway, and overturned on the south side of the highway. Gamble was unconscious at the scene. Emergency crews extricated Gamble from his vehicle and took him to the Yucca Valley airport where he was flown by Mercy Air to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs. The crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
And then, about half hour later, a second crash just a half mile west on Highway 62, further snarled traffic on Highway 62. About 2:20 p.m., Stephanie Brophy, 38, of Yucca Valley, was in her 2004 Nissan and had stopped at the westbound traffic light at La Contenta Road. Behind Brophy was Francisco Rodriguez, 27, of Palm Springs in a 2005 Dodge. After the light turned green, Rodriguez, expecting Brophy to start driving, drove his Dodge into the back of Brophy’s Nissan at approximately 10 miles per hour. Stephanie Brophy was taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center with a complaint of pain.
