A Twentynine Palms man was arrested Sunday after he was found with a military smoke grenade. According to the Sheriff’s Department, deputies were investigating a case of assault with a deadly weapon about 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning. James Baele, 40, was identified as a suspect in the assault. About 5:30 a.m., deputies stopped Baele near Araby and Baseline Road in Twentynine Palms. During the stop, deputies discovered a military-grade smoke grenade. James Baele was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive, booked into the Morongo Basin Jail, and released Sunday afternoon on $25,000 bail.
