The Kiwanis Club of Twentynine Palms recently named the Darr family as its annual Family of the Year. According to Kiwanis Club Assistant Secretary Herman Platzke, “The Family of the Year award directs attention to the critical role of the family in society, honoring those families which best typify the traditional virtues of family living.” Criteria for the award included characteristics of love and respect in the family, as well as participation in community and school activities. The Darr family was presented with the award plaque during a ceremony on Tuesday, August 13.

The Darr family of Twentynine Palms are father and mother, Steve and Carolyn Darr and children, Zea Foley, JR Foley, Ash, AJ, Kay-Leeann, Ella and Tyrian.

The Darr family is involved in a myriad of activities: Boy Scouts, American Heritage Girls, Little Church of the Desert, and Awanas at Palms Baptist .

Zea attends Copper Mountain College with plans to apply for the nursing program. JR and Ash are Boy Scouts with Troop 77. JR is making plans for his Eagle Scout project. AJ is a member of the Young Marines program while Kay-Leeann is part of American Heritage Girls and Ella will join her in the fall.

Carolyn serves as the Director of Little School of the Desert, helping with a variety of projects. Through her work she is involved with many families of young children and her care for these families continues beyond school. She gives to families in need and loves to drop off random meals and surprises to hurting hearts, “just because.”

Steve has been a civil servant aboard the Marine Corps Base for almost 10 years and much of his free time he volunteers at Little Church and Little School of the Desert. He worked with others erecting a new playset for the Little School playground, a volunteer effort. He and Carolyn serve as Awanas ministers at Palms Baptist.

The family seeks opportunities for their children to give back to the community from trash pick up to toy drives.
