TThe Twentynine Palms City Council has finally taken an official position on illegal immigration. Reporter David Haldane explains…
No sanctuary in Twentynine Palms!
That was the unanimous decision of the City Council last night as the high-desert community joined a growing list of cities opposed to the California Values Act, which forbids them from informing federal authorities about individuals believed to have entered the country illegally.
In making the motion, Councilman Joel Klink echoed the views of his colleagues.
“Why do we want a sanctuary state? I don’t want it.…I just feel that we’re taking a lot away from our local police department. If you’re illegal…you should be sent back to wherever you came from.”
The council directed staff to send letters expressing its position to Donald Trump, Governor Jerry Brown, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra, as well as other cities opposed to sanctuary.
The full-on vote was met by wild cheering from the large audience, a number of whom had spoken in favor of the motion.
