Both the Twentynine Palms High School Wildcat swim teams devoured the Rams of Desert Mirage High School earlier this month, 120-14 for the girls, and 116-20 for the boys. The swimmers then headed off to De Anza League Finals and CIF to finish the season May 4. Taking first in the finals were Lindsey Scamman in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly; Brian Soster in the 50 freestyle; Lexi Wade in the 100 backstroke; and Lea Speer, Cortni Rahn, Lexi Wade, and Nicole Elmer in the 400 free relay. After a week of problems with the pool the Rams came to town on May 2 to take on the Wildcats. The Ladycats quickly jumped out in front with first, second, and fourth place finishes in the 200 medley relay (Gabby Crank, Lexi Wade, Lindsey Scamman, and Kyra Minatrea; Anna Marie Hanson, Devanee Johnson, Catalina Aguilar, and Melisa Vasquez; Marrisa Washington, Bella Crank, Maggie O’Brien, and Ashley Waring).
They followed this up by sweeping the 200 freestyle (first, Cortni Rahn; second, Nicole Elmer; and third, Lea Speer); the 200 individual medley (first, Lindsey Scamman; second, Kyra Minatrea; and third, Lexi Wade); the 50 free (first, Gabby Crank; second, Melisa Vasquez; and third, Bella Crank); 100 free (first, Gabby Crank, second, Ashley Waring; and third, Bella Crank); 500 free (first, Nicole Elmer; second, Lea Speer; third, Anna Marie Hanson); 200 free relay (first, Gabby Crank, Cortni Rahn, Lindsey Scamman, and Kyra Minatrea; second, Ashley Waring, Lea Speer, Bella Crank, and Nicole Elmer; third, Devanee Johnson, Anna Marie Hanson, Catalina Aguilar, and Melisa Vasquez); and the 100 backstroke (first, Lexi Wade; second, Devanee Johnson; and third, Ashley Waring).
In the 100 butterfly, Cortni Rahn took first, with Marissa Washington placing third. In the 100 breaststroke, Kyra Minatrea finished first, while Catalina Aguilar placed third, and Maggie O’Brien finished fourth.
In the final race of the afternoon, the 400 free relay, the team of Lea Speer, Nicole Elmer Lexi Wade, and Cortni Rahn finished with another first place for the Ladycats.
Not to be outdone, the boys also went first (Tyler Ambrams, Kevin Johnson, Kyle Bobadilla, and Brian Soster) and second (Glen Reaves, Marcus Freitas, Matthew Councell, and Cody Landry) in the 200 medley relay.
Nick Valenzuela led the boys off in the 200 free with a win followed by Tanner Rush in second and Marcus Freitas taking third place.
Kyle Bobadilla won the 200 individual medley, with Glen Reaves coming in right behind him for second place.
Brian Soster took first place in the 50 free, with Cody Landry taking third.
Tyler Ambrams won the 100 butterfly, while Brian Soster, Nick Valenzuela, and Cody Landry went first, second, and third in the 100 free.
In the 500 free, Kevin Johnson took first with Matthew Councell coming in second.
The boys continued their first and second finishes in the 200 free relay (Nick Valenzuela, Tyler Ambrams, Kyle Bobadilla, and Brian Soster; Tanner Rush, Glen Reaves, Marcus Freitas, and Matthew Councell), 100 backstroke (Kevin Johnson, Marcus Freitas), and 100 breaststroke (Tyler Ambrams, Kyle Bobadilla) with Tanner Rush placing fourth.
In the final race, 400 free relay, the team of Kevin Johnson, Cody Landry, Tanner Rush Nick Valenzuela swam unopposed for the win.
The swim team headed to De Anza League Finals on May 4. In the 200 medley relay, the girls’ team of Lexi Wade, Lindsey Scamman, Gabby Crank, and Kyra Minatrea finished second, while the boys’ team of Kevin Johnson, Kyle Bobadilla, Tyler Ambrams, and Brian Soster finished fourth.
Cortni Rahn took third place in the 200 free, while Nick Valenzuela finished fourth for the boys’ team.
In the 200 individual medley, Lindsey Scamman took first place.
In the 50 free, Gabby Crank took fourth place for the girls, while Brian Soster placed first in the boys’ race.
Lindsey Scamman continued her domination with another first place finish in the 100 butterfly, while Tyler Ambrams placed fourth.
In the 100 free, Gabby Crank placed third while Brian Soster placed second overall.
In the 500 free, the boys and girls both took third (Nick Valenzuela and Nicole Elmer) and fourth (Kevin Johnson and Lea Speer).
The 200 free relay found the team of Gabby Crank, Kyra Minatrea, Cortni Rahn, and Lindsey Scamman taking third for the girls, while the boys team of Nick Valenzuela, Tyler Ambrams, Kyle Bobadilla, and Brian Soster finished fourth.
In the women’s 100 backstroke, Lexi Wade took first place.
In the final race, the 400 free relay, the ladies continued their domination of the De Anza League with a first place win for the team of Lea Speer, Cortni Rahn, Lexi Wade, and Nicole Elmer, while the men’s team of Kevin Johnson, Cody Landry, Tanner Rush, and Nick Valenzuela finished fourth.
Coach Michelle and Coach Irene want to thank the swimmers for their outstanding performances and dedication and the parents and community for all their support.
On 11 and 13 May several of the Twentynine Palms Swim Team Wildcats traveled to Riverside, CA for the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Finals. Lindsey Scamman qualified for the 100 Butterfly as the 18th seed. After her return on Friday she moved up to 16th place overall with a 1.06:58 setting a new De Anza League Record. The 200 Medley Relay team of Lexi Wade, Lindsey Scamman, Kyra Minatrea, and Cortni Rahn qualified as well. They came in to the event seeded 35 but left on Wednesday afternoon 31st overall in the division with a 2:19.02 final time.
