The girls’ basketball team from Twentynine Palms High School went 4 and 0 in the Rancho Verde tournament December 6, 7, 9, and 10 to win the championship. Coach Tim Stanford said the Wildcats’ season record stands at 7 and 1.
On December 9, the girls won their game over Paris High School, 62 to 38. Leading the team in scoring were Tatiyanna Mackall with 14 points; Destiny Dedmon with 14 points; Makya Bullion with nine points; and Victoria Pacheco with eight points. In the championship game, the ’Cats faced off against the division 2A Carter Lions from Rialto, fresh off their overtime victory over tournament host Rancho Verde High School. The ’Cats took a lead of 43 to 38 into halftime, but the Lions came roaring back in the third quarter to take the lead, 59 to 54, but the ‘Cats didn’t quit. The Wildcats outscored the Lions 20 to 15 to push the game into overtime. The overtime score was 14 to 4 Wildcats, and the final score was 88 to 78 Wildcats. Makya Bullion had five of her seven points in the overtime period to help the team win and she was chosen to the all-tournament team for the second tournament in two weeks, with her outstanding, all-around play. Makya is also this week’s Wildcat of the Week. Also chosen to the all-tournament team was Destiny Dedmon; her 22 points were key in the final. Tatiyanna Mackall, who was chosen tournament MVP, had 31 hard earned points in the championship game to lead all scorers.
