Derek Sutherland recorded his 13th interception for the season and a KJ Magwood interception return set up a score. The Twentynine Palms High School Wildcats will host Quartz Hill in the semi-finals of the CIF Division 11 playoff bracket. The Wildcats are 9-3, and Quartz Hill has a 9-3 record. The CIF playoff game will be played at Tom Nicoll Stadium in Twentynine Palms at 7 p.m. Friday, November 25.
Twentynine Palms defeated the Katella Knights by a score of 26-7 in a CIF-SS Division 11 second-round game.
Katella, who won the Orange League title and was ranked number one in CIF Division 11, suffered their first defeat this season. The Cats shut down Katella’s offense which has averaged 44 points per game by holding them to a season low of seven total points. The Cats stopped the Knights on seven fourth down attempts and took a 19-0 lead at halftime.
Hunter Tygart and Hugh Carpenter combined to run for 250 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense. Tygart opened the game with a 79-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
KJ Magwood returned an interception 64 yards to the 5-yard line. On fourth down, Carpenter scored on a one-yard run for a 13-0 lead. The Wildcats took a 19-0 advantage before halftime when Carpenter raced 55 yards on a fourth-down quarterback run with a 1:37 left in the second quarter.
Katella closed the score to within 12 in the third quarter with a 19-7 score.
Tygart sealed the Wildcats win with a 63-yard touchdown run with 8:35 to play in the fourth quarter.
